Living in Halifax's North End

By Tom Moore, Halifax REALTOR® with eXp Realty

The North End has a more independent, artistic spirit than anywhere else on the peninsula. Colourful row houses, local coffee shops, small restaurants and a growing food and arts scene along streets like Agricola and Gottingen give it an energy that's hard to manufacture. The Hydrostone, with its tree-lined boulevards and little market, is one of the most recognisable pockets in the city.

Here's the honest picture: what you get, what you give up and what homes really cost.

Best for: character, independent businesses and a walkable neighbourhood that's still taking shape.

The pros and cons

Pro: personality over polish. Murals, cafes, breweries and local shops are a big part of daily life here, and the community feel is strong.

Pro: walkable and central. Downtown, the waterfront and the MacKay and Macdonald bridges are all close, so getting around without a long drive is easy.

Con: older homes need a closer look. Century homes and row houses have charm, but charm and maintenance often go hand in hand. Get a thorough inspection.

Con: it's still evolving. Some blocks are fully revitalized and others are still in progress, so street by street matters more here than in most areas.

Homes and prices in the North End

The North End mixes century homes, row houses and newer infill and condo developments. Historically it offered more variety in price points than the South End, but that gap has narrowed as the area has grown in popularity.

Because prices change block by block, compare actual listings and recent sales rather than relying on reputation. I'm happy to pull recent North End sales for you. For HRM-wide numbers, see my Halifax market hub.
