Living in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia
By Tom Moore, Halifax REALTOR® with eXp Realty
Dartmouth isn't Halifax's little sibling. It's its own place, the "City of Lakes," with a strong community feel, often more house for the money and one of the most loyal local identities in Nova Scotia. Downtown Dartmouth around Portland Street and Alderney Landing has become a real food and arts destination.
Here's the honest picture: what you get, what you give up and what homes really cost.
Best for: more space for your budget, lakes and trails, and a short trip across the harbour.
The pros and cons
Pro: better value. Dartmouth generally offers more home for your money than comparable Halifax peninsula neighbourhoods.
Pro: lakes, trails and the ferry. Lake Banook, Shubie Park and dozens of lakes are close by, and the ferry from Alderney Landing to the Halifax waterfront takes about 12 minutes.
Con: the bridges. If you work downtown Halifax, you'll cross the MacKay or Macdonald Bridge. That's typically 15 to 25 minutes in normal traffic, but both bridges back up at peak times, and there are tolls.
Con: the gap is narrowing. Dartmouth isn't "cheap" anymore. Prices have risen sharply here too; it's relatively better value, not a bargain.
What homes cost in Dartmouth
As a general guide (2026), buyers can typically expect to pay about 10 to 20% less in Dartmouth than for a similar property on the Halifax peninsula. Areas like Portland Estates, Woodside and Woodlawn still offer detached and semi-detached homes at prices that are getting hard to find on the Halifax side, while established communities like Cole Harbour sit a bit higher.
If you work in Dartmouth, Burnside or from home, you avoid the bridges entirely, which makes the value even better. For HRM-wide numbers, see my Halifax market hub.
